twirling not spiraling

Experimental documentary film
Duration: 20 min

In Arabic, شرود [shuroud] – means; daydreaming, mind wandering, detaching, and sometimes, dissociating from current events. While, سرود [suroud], is a kind of purposeful شرود [shuroud], and can mean; interpreting, enumerating, rambling, transmitting, trancing, reading, narrating, or storytelling.

Lead by curious aquatic melodies, warped waves, a twirling hourglass, chatty birds, an ocean rock, melting statues, rubber duckies, a tidal washing machine, and a never ending stream of thought, the work explores multiple ways of experiencing time through these two terms and their many definitions.

Shown on November 9, 2022 at the Del Mar Theater in Santa Cruz, California as part of final project screening in Social Documentation MFA, UCSC, Santa Cruz, California

Performance and installation

The video is further activated by an installation and performance work featuring printed research material, graphs and memes, a series of sketches and drawings, 2 aquariums, magnetic sand, a rubber duckie, an hourglass, a soundscape, and a 3-channel video projection.

During the performance, I read the film’s script while cutting social media posts, memes, reports, and other accounts of recent world events for the duration of the 20 minute video.

Presented on December 2nd, 2022 at Indexical in Santa Cruz, California
